Every year, Marshall Terrace teams up with Metro Blooms to help fund a number of rain gardens within our neighborhood. Residents apply for a spot in our rain garden lottery which chooses participants at random. This year we are helping to fund THREE rain gardens!
What is a rain garden?
A rain garden is a small garden filled with native shrubs, flowers and/or perennials within a shallow depression. It is designed to hold and soak up runoff from rain water that flows from roofs, driveways patios and lawns – water that would otherwise run on other harder surfaces, collecting chemicals and other pollutants along the way, before flowing into storm drains and eventually nearby lakes and streams.
Not only are rain gardens good for the environment by filtering rain water runoff, they are also habitats for pollinators and other wildlife!
Though they are called rain gardens it’s important to note that they are not ‘water gardens’ – while they hold water, they only do so for 12-48 hours. No need to worry about mosquitos!
What does it cost?
Typically, residents pay between $300-$400, which covers the consultation fee, plants, and mulch. MTNO pays for the rest!
