Xcel Energy will be demolishing a deteriorating building at the Riverside Generating Station in Northeast Minneapolis in late 2025. Once removal is complete, the company will install a permanent fence along its property line. Schedules are subject to change.
Xcel Energy has also initiated an evaluation to determine if historical coal ash is present at Riverside Generating Station following the United States Environmental Protection Agency’s Coal Combustion Residuals Rule (CCR Rule). The CCR Rule was most recently updated in 2024 to require evaluations at power plants across the country where coal ash is no longer generated or where coal ash may have historically been deposited. During this work, consultants will observe field conditions and collect soil samples through borings. Results will be publicly posted to our website in future reports.
